CALL FOR PROPOSALS - Residency programme at rum46 The Public Space and Rhetoric To all artists, curators, art theorists and other cultural producers living in the Nordic or the Baltic countries outside of Denmark The exhibition space and artist collective rum46 hereby invites you to send us a proposal for a project you would like to carry out during a residency at rum46 in Århus, Denmark. rum46 will organize a 2 - 4 weeks stay in Århus for 2-4 artists or cultural producers, who would like to work on a project within the framework of our topic The Public Space and Rhetoric Thoughts and inspiration rum46 would like to take a critical look at communication in the public domain- How ideas are taken over, misused, and their meanings are taken out of context and distorted. What linguistic potential for making statements exists and who has the right to these statements in the public space? Everything from election posters, advertisements, information stands and other marketing material to the press, poetry, song and radio and tv productions and other publications. What place does the communal have in the public space today? What more or less hidden marketing agenda permeates the urban space? Today one can speak of "verbal incontinence" from all sides of the political spectrum and this results in a language which is ineffective as a tool to develop democracy. Rhetoric is an activity, the linguistic attempt to convince others and in this way it is manipulative. To what degree can one say that the individual uses a language and to what degree is he or she controlled by it? What stance do we take in relation to rhetoric's ethical dimension? More about the residency You do not need to have a lengthy project description ready when you apply for the residency programme, but if you would like to work on a project which relevant to our topic, we would be happy to hear from you. All kinds of proposals are welcome. You could suggest a talk, an exhibition, a work of research, an art project in the streets of Århus, a video-screening or anything else you would like to do in Århus, A part of your project must address the public and the art-scene in Århus. Please send a brief C.V. together with your project description. Please send your proposal to rum46@rum46.dk or to our postal address. Please remember to include your email address and we will send you a confirmation. After a selection process all applicants will be notified. If we accept your proposal, rum46 will provide accommodation, nothing luxurious, but it will be an apartment which is basic and functional. Additionally you can use the premises of rum46 as your office and studio; however you will have to share the space with the other members of our space. As well as providing free accommodation we pay 4500 kr. to each project and cover travelling expenses. As the residency programme is supported by Nordic Culture Point, applications are restricted to artists from, or resident in, the Nordic and Baltic countries.
